Tip — if you’re adventurous and not afraid of a long potentially dangerous walk, then head down on foot from the Cristo Redentor. The first part is a bit boring, just a road without a proper pavement, which you could skip with a taxi. But once civilisation begins the views are spectacular and the buildings and streets are old and charming . You do pass nearby a few favelas, but if you’re sensible you should avoid any trouble. Follow the biggest road as it winds down the mountain, eventually picking up the tram track. And from there (Santa Teresa) take a taxi or head down towards the aqueduct (Lapa), over which the tram line passes.
