Tip — Throughout Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador you can find often tasty food on the cheap by going to a non-touristy restaurant which has a sign outside saying ‘menu economico‘. These are usually for lunch only. It typically includes a soup (all the soups taste the same, so don’t worry if there’s a foot floating in it, it’ll taste the same), a main course and a drink. Unless you’re eating lunch especially late there will be various options. Often restaurants that have aggressive white lighting will have these cheap menus – I don’t know if there’s a causal relationship there.
